The Timmins Museum: NEC has opened up a new exhibition in its grey gallery by a Canadian painter, printmaker, and educator – Frederick Hagan. This exhibition titled Ontario North: The Frederick Hagan Lithographs 1942-1953 focuses on 37 lithograph prints produced by Hagan in northern Ontario during the years of World War II and immediately following. In lithography, the artist chemically treats the printing surface of a limestone block so that water and oil repel each other, and the greasy image captures ink for printing on paper. The printing press exerts a sliding pressure, but because the stone undergoes virtually no wear in printing, a single stone can last for decades. Frederick Hagan’s printing press and lithograph stones, gifted by his family, are still in production and are located at Nipissing University in North Bay.

Cette exposition s’intitule Le nord Ontarien : Les lithographies de Frederick Hagan 1942-1953 portent sur 37 lithographies produites par Hagan dans le Nord de l’Ontario pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et immédiatement après. En lithographie, l’artiste traite chimiquement la surface d’impression d’un bloc de calcaire pour que l’eau et l’huile se repoussent et que l’image grasse capture l’encre pour l’impression sur papier. La presse à imprimer exerce une pression de glissement, mais parce que la pierre ne subit pratiquement aucune usure dans l’impression, une seule pierre peut durer des décennies. Les pierres d’imprimerie et de lithographie de Frederick Hagan, données par sa famille, sont encore en production et sont situées à l’Université Nipissing à North Bay.
