April 12th – May 8th 2016

From his early 20’s Walter has realized his artistic side. As a trained civil engineer he is used to detail and precision which reflects in the creative artwork he does now   He works in oil and watercolour mediums but recently has become enthused about the various printmaking techniques especially Intaglio and Linocut printmaking.

Walter was raised and educated in Germany. In 1966 he moved with his wife Maria to New Liskeard. He took art classes early on with various well known artists. Walter was one of the founding members of the Palette and Brush Club.

As an active participant in the art community, Walter joined the executive of the Temiskaming Art Gallery and has been the chair for over 20 years and presently the treasurer. Walter frequently exhibits his work and has work in many private and public collections throughout Canada and Europe.

Artist Statement

For millennia our earth has preserved so many secrets which were brought up from the bottom to the top of our planet.

Being born we immediately become part of our planet earth, which is only a tiny speck in the universe. For millions of years our earth has developed into what it is now and should be sacred to us. Our earth moved, turned, lifted and shifted. Flora and fauna were created and preserved and evolved over millions of years. What did we do to the place which supports all life forms? It should be so sacred to us. As an avid gardener I am always amazed that after the harshness of the climate everything sprouts again and supports all living things. It is our duty to take care of our sacred earth.  Everything is interconnected.

Travelling and gardening are the inspiration for my art. Gardening fulfills me joy and happiness and brings me close to the secrets of our Sacred Earth. For me gardening is a different art form, sculpturing the landscape, making something happen, planning for the future.  My garden is constantly evolving and so is my art.

My travels take me to many places around the world and opens me up to the wonders it has to offer, what human kind has created, how wind and water, heat and cold and volcanoes have formed and changed the surface of the earth. How fauna and flora have adapted to the ever changing and challenging environment which is more and more influenced by us humans.

To experience these wonders of the creation is very exciting and inspiring. In recent years I learned the art of print making from friend and fellow artist, Faye Digulla. This opened up a whole new spectrum for me and how to create my art. Printing leads itself wonderfully to express and see the world in a different and more simplified way. Etchings, lino cut, collagraph and mono type prints are perfect to create art to reflect our Sacred Earth.
