Collections & Archives

The Timmins Museum: NEC houses a collection of over 5,000 artefacts and more than 20,000 historic images of the region. The collection also includes maps, blueprints, video footage, oral histories, diaries, and original copies of The Porcupine Advance, a newspaper published from 1912 to 1950. Among its holdings are textiles, mineral samples, mining tools and equipment, household objects from the turn of the century, and an art collection comprising over 300 pieces.

Statement of purpose: To collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret artifacts, works of art, and natural specimens which illustrate the environment, history and culture of Timmins and area.

Art:

Works of art include oils, watercolours, mixed media, prints, steatite sculptures, clay sculptures, photographs and collage.

Archival:

Municipal records and assorted manuscripts, maps, positive transparencies, historic photographs and negatives, historic film footage, video cassettes, oral histories on tape.

Artifacts:

Archaeological specimens, textiles, tools and equipment, appliances, transportation and communication devices, furniture, mining equipment.

Mineral Specimens:

Costain Mineral Collection and the White Collection. In 2014, the museum acquired the Hollinger House—a preserved 1930s mining home that showcases a collection of household items from that era, offering visitors a glimpse into everyday life during Timmins’ early mining history.

The museum is situated on the traditional territory of the Mattagami First, Flying Post, and Matachewan First Nations located in Treaty 9.  These lands are home to many Ojibway, Cree, Oji-Cree, Algonquin and Metis people.
